In February 2015, James took Elizabeth to a soap-making boutique for her birthday, thinking she would enjoy the novelty of it. He was right! But what he didn't realize was that this birthday celebration experience sparked an even bigger interest in him. As the couple stirred their selected exfoliant additives into their chosen soap molds, James's mind was whirring. By the time they were ready to go home, James was talking to the owner about the process, materials, and everything in between. James and Elizabeth walked out to the car with their new soaps, and James said, "I can do that." 

Before long, James was researching soap making methods, settling on cold process, and ordering lye and oils--by the gallon. Soon their storage room became the soap room, filled with essential oils, loaf molds, thermometers, and other equipment. The day James had a 5-gallon bucket of coconut oil delivered, it was time for Elizabeth's mind to whir. She knew she would want to make this into more than a hobby--she wanted to share it with others. 

So the couple fell into their roles: James, the artisan, and Elizabeth, the entrepreneur. In the early days, James experimented with different oils in different amounts, producing stacks and stacks of soap. Soon they enlisted family and friends to be their first feedback group as they continued to try new variations, new colors, new scents.  A year and a half later, James and Elizabeth were ready to launch Lightning Peak Artisan Soaps.
